🔰  Waterways was the main medium of trade and commerce in ancient and medieval times. Human civilization was guided by the river. For this reason,Most of the major trade centers and cities were built in the river coast region.

Undoubtedly, our Bangladesh [ Bengal Province ] was not an exception to this rule. Since ancient times, many independent-Prosperous trade centers were built on the both sides of the of the Ganga River ( Hooghly ) in The
Bengal Province.

Notable among the trading centers [ North of Calcutta city ] were Kamarhati, Panihati, Barahnagar, Sukhchar-Khardah, Nawabganj and Chanak.

almost all of the above  centers are presents today, but one of them ,
Chanak is no longer traceable.

🔰  But during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah of Bengal in the 15th-16th century, we notice that small trading center , named Chanak.

Chanak was first mentioned by the poet Vipradas Pipalai in his 'Mansa Vijay Kavye'. Here he wrote:
" Chanak went away to the land of Burnia,
Tahar Melan Bahe Akna Mahesh "

Leter on, A map drawn by Fanden Brook in 1660 locates a place called ' Chanak' between Kankinara and Barahnagar.
 So naturally the question arises,
where is Chanak now ?

🔰  Chanak's multidimensional transformation by the British.
Calcutta became a prosperous trading center during the rule of the East-India Company. The city of Calcutta was the capital of British rule, and Chanak was located 16 miles north of Calcutta on the banks of the Ganges.

Chanak is preferred by the company as Garden City.
The second focal point of British rule in Bengal after Calcutta.

🔰  In fact, it was during the company's rule that a small village , Chanak became the modern city of Barrackpore. It has become a very meaningful business place.

In 1772, the Company built here the first "Army Barracks" or Cantonment  among the  India and the whole of Southeast Asia.

🔰  Then the arrival of people of different races and religions from the entire subcontinent to work in this cantonment started to increase. And for the needs of these different people, Barrackpore city has been transformed by different types of markets.

🔰  Generally this Markets are built around cantonments or army barracks. The largest of these markets was "Sadar market.
[ The word sadar is an Arabic word that means
Main or Center Bazar]

🔰  Sadar Bazar was built with many different mahals.
For example, Lockari Mahal, Kunjra Mahal, Muchi Mahal, Bekar Mahal, Sabji Mahal etc. I The word Mahal means, neighborhood or area.
These mahals were divided mainly on the basis of different castes of people & their religion who associated with the market  . Hindi and Uddhu speaking people were the main buyers of this market.

This area adjacent to Sadar Bazar and Manirampur is the oldest part of Barrackpore city. Many famous people once lived in this region. Notable among them was Rashtraguru Surendra Nath Banerjee.

☸ Sadar Bazar is now one of the main trading centers within Barrackpore.
